Though gone for several decades, the coal industry had a huge impact on northern Illinois. Our speaker will focus on the history of the coal industry in northern Illinois from the work force, to the mine types to the social life in the coal towns, labor struggles and major mine disasters.
Speaker: Richard Joyce is a descendant of coal miners on both sides of his family and grew up on a farm near South Wilmington. A resident of Coal City, he is a retired teacher and serves on the Grundy County board.
