Larry Olson and Michelle Wilson worked together to ID Larry's wife's great-grandfather, whose identity has been a life-long mystery. Larry applied the Leeds Method to isolate matches to Becky's paternal grandmother, Myrtle, and then to further isolate the subset of those who did not relate to Myrtle's mother. Larry called in Michelle for assistance when the resulting targeted family had a father and son, same-named, who both looked to be plausible candidates. Michelle's knowledge of French-Canadian names and resources allowed them to drill into more distant matches to get a definitive answer between the father and the son, finally revealing Becky's great-grandfather.
This talk will explore the Leeds Method as well as record sets from Canada, Michigan, and Minnesota used in the search. Finding a great-grandfather using DNA is not a trivial matter; this session will show you that it is, however, sometimes possible. Larry and Michelle will co-present.
Cost: Guests may attend for $5. CAGGNI SIGs are free for members.
About the DNA Special Interest Group: Normally this is a members-only group that focuses on learning the methods for analyzing DNA test results. We study topics such as autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, Y-DNA and surname projects, X-DNA and ancestral admixture results. We'll also investigate third-party tools for analyzing your raw data and comparing DNA and gedcom data with test kit results from companies besides the one you tested with. This session is being opened to non-members, one in a series CAGGNI hopes to offer in 2024.
CAGGNI Members take note: Please register for the Zoom link specific to this meeting.
