Topics

Fantastic Internet Search Techniques (B/virtual) – Joshua Taylor: Learn the key steps and techniques to ensure your success when searching for genealogical materials online. This session will discuss approaches for using Google, digital archives and other resources.

Making a Coffee Table Book (S/in-person) – Michelle Wilson: Michelle has created three print-on-demand family history books. The books are full color, and chock full of photos, documents, newspaper clips, genealogy charts and other family artifacts. Learn the process of putting together a beautifully formatted book, how to print copies at a very reasonable price and how to publish and make your book available to others.

New and Free: Periodical Source Index (PERSI) (B/virtual) – Curt Witcher: Many genealogists leave periodical literature untouched when exploring their families’ stories and histories. This presentation identifies the major types of genealogical and historical periodicals, what indices are available and how they can be most effectively used, and where one can find specific publications. Special attention is given to exploring the new, free Periodical Source Index, the largest and most comprehensive subject index in the genealogical field, now online at the Allen County Library Genealogy Center.

Thinking Inside the Box (S/in-person) – Candace Marx: Display Your Family History in a New and Unique Way. Creating a family history shadowbox is fun and easy! Candace Marx will walk you step-by-step through gathering supplies, planning a composition and putting the finishing touches on a unique shadowbox that highlights your ancestor’s achievements, hobbies and personality. We will learn some crafting “best practices” and look at great online resources to get your creativity flowing. Plus, we’ll discuss the history behind shadowboxes and displaying treasured items from loved ones.

Family Histories: If You Don’t Write Yours, Who Will? (S/virtual) – Harold Henderson: Many of us would like to write our families’ histories. Doing so requires preparation, organization, and persistence. Unless you’re an experienced writer, start small and work your way up. Do not expect to make money. I started in genealogy by writing favorite stories from my and my wife’s ancestral families. Presently it became clear that some of our ancestors were pretty well documented ... and others were not. So far I have published six titles, four by way of lulu.com, two by way of No Waste Publishing in St. Louis.

DNA: The Sublime Segment – Don’t Miss Out! (B/in-person) – Michelle Wilson: The DNA segments we inherit from our common ancestors are what make DNA match lists possible. Studying these segments gives us a much more detailed and nuanced window into our inheritance and can even help us begin to re-construct the genomes of long-deceased ancestors. Learn how to use the chromosome browsers to advance your work, and how to think about and organize your own segments using tools such as DNA Painter. Don’t wait to get started on yours!

Celebrating Ancestors Through Quilts (S/virtual) – Mary Roddy: Quilts are a way to share your history and your family’s history in a creative way. This presentation is part inspiration and part instruction. Get your creative juices flowing with a show of quilts large and small, from bed-size quilts, to wall-hangings, to small table quilts. Learn some techniques such as how to incorporate photos on fabric and how stitching can enhance the quilt. Come away with some ideas to create a gift for a family or some art for your home.

Using Fold3 to Research Your Veteran Ancestors (B/in-person) – Tina Beaird: Fold3 is an amazing research tool to trace your military ancestors. This presentation will guide you through the website as you mine for genealogical details about your ancestors from the Revolutionary War to World War II and beyond.
