About CAGGNI

The Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois (CAGGNI) is a vibrant genealogy group with nearly 200 active members. Most are amateur genealogists, some are professional genealogists, and many are just getting started in family history research. Our common thread is an enthusiasm for genealogy.

CAGGNI is an active group, putting on over 30 programs annually, publishing a monthly newsletter, hosting a website, and serving the local genealogical community, including nonmembers.

The group also has a popular and active Facebook group open to any interested genealogist.

CAGGNI is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the State of Illinois.

The objectives of the group are as follows:

  • Assisting members in their genealogical research.
  • Keeping members informed on new technologies and techniques to support their research.
  • Providing genealogical and computer mentoring for its membership.
  • Undertaking projects that support the genealogical community in the region.

We welcome you to review our member benefits and join us!

Monthly Programs

CAGGNI‘s programs cover a wide range of genealogical topics, often with a focus on using technology to foster research. Our Membership Programs are a great way to enhance your genealogy skills and to meet with others who share a common interest.

The organization holds 11 monthly meetings on the 3rd Saturday of the month (except December), usually at 10:00 a.m. The meetings are held as hybrid Zoom and in-person meetings. Meeting locations are generally local public libraries in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago (e.g., Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Schaumburg)  and are confirmed 90 days in advance.

Quarterly Special Interest Groups (SIG)

The group has six Special Interest Groups (SIG). They are for those interested in more in-depth learning about software or other genealogy topics. These interactive sessions offer the attendee the opportunity to learn and practice new techniques along with a facilitator.

Each of the SIGs generally meets quarterly. Please see the events calendar for upcoming dates and times for each SIGs.

Topical SIGs:

  • DNA SIG
  • Historical SIG
  • Technology SIG

User Group SIGs:

  • Family Tree Maker (FTM) SIG
  • Reunion SIG
  • RootsMagic / The Master Genealogist (RM+TMG) SIG

Biennial Special Events

  • GeneaQuest Conference (Even Years)
  • Road Trips (Odd Years)

CAGGNI presents a biennial all-day genealogical conference, named GeneaQuest. This conference, with registration open to genealogists across the region, promotes the use of advanced research techniques, cutting-edge technology and complex DNA concepts for effective genealogical research.

Members of CAGGNI organize biennial road trips to genealogical libraries where members research during the day and attend optional social events such as group dinners in the evenings.
