This lecture encourages one to go beyond the obvious use of a city directory of locating an ancestor. The directory provides an opportunity to understand our ancestor's historical context. Pictures, advertisements, maps of the city and many more items are often included. The audience will be encouraged to understand each directory's unique qualities. Examples will be used to illustrate various points.

Teresa Steinkamp McMillin, CG®, author of Guide to Hanover Military Records, 1514-1866 on Microfilm at the Family History Library, researches German ancestry, reads German script and also researches Chicago and Cook County ancestors. She taught at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research and Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. She created courses for Ancestry Academy and Legacy.
