DNA Special Interest Group - 18 Nov 2023

Today's Topic: DNA Painter

DNAPainter.com offers a host of tools for analyzing your DNA and charting your segment analysis. We will demonstrate some of the most commonly used free tools such as the WATO "What are the Odds" tool and the Shared CM tool, and then dive into the mechanics of uploading your identified shared segments from FTDNA, MyHeritage and 23andMe into a Chromosome Map. DNAPainter regularly adds new tools, and we hope to explore a couple of those as well.

Added Workshop: Bring your laptops. This session will be a 50-minute hybrid presentation followed by a short break and a one-hour live-only workshop for those who are at the venue. If you want to participate in the workshop, bring your laptop and transfer your Ancestry DNA results into MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA in advance of the session.

Do you have a favorite tool at DNAPainter that we haven't already mentioned?Send in your request well in advance, and we will look into sharing it at this meeting. A big shout-out to Cathy Gulbrantson for suggesting today's topic.

About the DNA SIG

This group focuses on learning the methods for analyzing DNA test results. We study topics such as autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, Y-DNA and surname projects, X-DNA and ancestral admixture results. We'll also investigate third-party tools for analyzing your raw data and comparing DNA and gedcom data with test kit results from companies besides the one you tested with.

DNA can break down genealogical brick walls once thought impenetrable – but only if you know how.

This SIG endeavors to be interactive and welcomes your questions. Get ready to put your DNA results to work for you!

SIG Lead: Michelle Wilson

Future Topics: If you have a topic you would like to present or see presented, please reach out to Michelle at DNA @ caggni.org.

Meeting Style: This SIG is typically hybrid. For this session, you may attend the lecture portion (first hour) remote or in-person at Prospect Heights Public Library, 12 N Elm St, Prospect Heights. Note that the Workshop, which will begin about 1 pm, is Live-Only at the Prospect Heights location.
